I'm kinda thinking this is a pretty cool practical storage option. Kinda having a bit of all the worlds and let's be serious little sacrifice when it comes to the nvme r/w. It might or well seems to be a good price point option for having a nvme and a disk drive its much more convenient to have the directory as 1 drive.

Did mentalfloss or the EPA care to explain exactly what they mean to imply by calling that methane a contribution to global warming? Here's a fun fact: The US contributes about a gnat's ass worth of fuck all to MANMADE global warming. Not only is the methane from those cows so insignificant that it is laughable that anybody even talks about it still, the entire country, the entire continent's contribution is beyond negligible even when we look at the most over exaggerated numbers.

In comparison, a used LSI controller card with SSD caching features is way cheaper on eBay. For $300 you can get a controller card $150, a used SAS SSD $80, and even optionally a permanent license key for the SSD caching features. Same spending so far, but the investment pays off when you add more drives to the array.

Hey Linus, did you know that there ist no Samsung NVMe Driver for the Samsung 980 Pro , that works with AMD Systems? The only available NVMe Driver ist a Microsoft Driver that isn´t really compatible with the Samsung 980 Pro on a AMD System. Do you know why? Why is Samsung selling this SSD without having a working Driver for AMD Systems?

How does it react to power outages? Also: When using it as a cache for a HDD, and if the SSD dies, can the HDD be read from like normally, so that a dead cache SSD doesn't mean a total loss of data? How about using it with a drive that already has data? Will it "adopt" it, or is it a mandatory reformat?

What if you paired RAM with a SSD and used the SSD just to store the data while the system is off? Insane speeds, long life and if done right could boost overall computer performance as a bit of extra system memory. I remember seeing this a long time ago. It used 8 sticks of laptop ddr2 and a 2.5" SSD.

Hey - Here is an idea.. Just wondering if you mount a third drive as a folder on your tiered drive if that would somehow link it enough that the system would promote stuff from Drive 3 to your fast tier. I have it set up like this on my computer just for convenience sake (one C drive, with a folder in the root that is actually a separate drive ;-) So now I have 3 drives all with a single drive letter.

every iteration of storage tech goes through hoop jumping to squeeze out performance and reliability until another better iteration comes along, well I'm patiently waiting for flash to go the way of spinning rust and make way for something with more "kick-assed-ness" to replace it already.............. its time.

    • Nick Miller
      Nick Miller

Such a tech exists but it's in very limited use. It's resistive memory based on the "memristor". Common name is ReRAM. Uses 20x less power, 100x faster read, 1000x faster write, 1 million write cycles (NAND is ~3000). It's higher density than NAND also. But at the moment you can't just buy it and put it into your machine. There are no consumer items based on it yet, it's all highly specialized because it's new and the cost is astronomical. I'd love to be able to have a memristor flash drive.
